IGNEUS CASE STUDY - THE BAILEY HOUSE WOOD PELLET SYSTEM
Introduction
The Bailey consists of a busy restaurant, public house and live music venue in Enniscorthy. The building was originally a malt store on the banks of the Slaney and had fallen into disrepair.
The building is in excess of 700m2. A 220kW wood pellet boiler system was installed to supply heating and domestic hot water for the whole building.
Installation
Originally LPG and oil were considered to heat the building but the cost of these fossil fuels and the difficulties associated with locating fuel tanks proved prohibitive. Biomass was considered and Igneus Ltd was retained to design and install a suitable wood pellet system.

A wood pellet boiler system is fed from a 20m3 store via a flexible auger.
A 3000 litre buffer tank was installed to maintain high efficiencies and assist the boiler to handle high peak loads in the future. A 2000 litre stainless steel calorifier was installed to serve the high hot water demand of the busy restaurant. There is no backup boiler to the wood pellet boiler system. There are, however, two 12kW immersions which are installed in the calorifier to backup the hot water.
Financials - Payback
The savings to date in comparison to oil or LPG result in a 5 – 6 year payback. However, when the rest of the site is fully developed and the district heating operational the running cost savings will increase significantly resulting in a 2 – 3 year payback.
